In Germany, since the beginning of 2003 the vapour recovery systems have been additionally equipped with a vapour recovery monitoring system. The purpose of this additional process is to detect problems promptly so reducing pump down time and ensuring a constantly high vapour recovery rate.

The function is based on the regulation of the flow rate ratio of dispensed petrol to extracted petrol vapour. This ratio in Europe is set to 1:1 (proportionality) and controlled by a mechanical (1) or electrical (2) proportional valve. Systems with speed control (3) do not require proportional valves.
